In radio communications, a form of angle modulation that changes the phase angle of the carrier wave in step with the modulating signal. Phase modulation is often used in telecommunications because of its inherent resistance to noise. Phase modulation is very similar to frequency modulation; you can actually pick up a phase modulated broadcast with a frequency modulation receiver, but it will be badly distorted.
