The largest type of cymbal, ranging from 20-24" in diameter. Rides are usually mounted on the right side of the drum kit, in similar position to one of the rack toms. The sound of a ride ranges from a distinct "ping" (common in rock music) to the drier sound (which has a bit of a hiss) prefered in jazz. Playing on the bell of the cymbal (in the center) generates a broader, harsher, and more focused sound. Rides are usually used for playing steady rhythms, especially in jazz.
