In many of Isaac Asimov's books, a roboticist is someone who designs robots. Two roboticists who were important characters in the book "Robots And Empire" were Amadiro and Mandamus.

In the short story "The Bicentennial Man", Andrew Martin contrasts a roboticist with a robopsychologist, who works with positronic brains, and a robobiologist, who works with organic robot bodies.
