marsh adjacent to the
coastline where
salt water from the
sea or
ocean constantly
intrudes to
create an
estuary of
brackish or salt water.
Saltwater marshes are often
populated with salt-tolerent grasses and weeds, such as
sawgrass, cord grass, salt hay grass, and needlerush. Animals of a saltwater marsh include
sea birds and a broad
variety of saltwater and freshwater
fish,
reptiles and
invertebrates.
Saltwater marshes can be found in
New Zealand, in the
Arctic, and along the Atlantic, Pacific, Alaskan and Gulf coasts of the
United States.
