What a DJ does when making music with the back and forth movements of vinyl under a stylus on a turntable. Originated by Kool DJ Herc, this style of sound creation is now deeply rooted in electronic music and urban expression. Current purveyors of this style include the masterfully inventive 'Invisibl Skratch Piklz'

It's said that DJ Qbert coined, or is at least a notable supporter of, the spelling of the word "skratch." He even tried to get Webster's to recognize the difference between skratching (what a turntablist does) and scratching (what a cat does), but they didn't buy it. Qbert's California plates say "SQRATCH."
