This is a kind of shorts, specially designed for
surfing. The shorts are kind of roomy, for extra movement ability just as in
snowboard clothes. Surfer jams are shaped in very straight lines without body form. Typical length is to just above the
kneecaps. The material of often
synthetic,
cotton is sometimes used, but have a strong tendency to limit movement when it gets wet and heavy. They always come with a string to make sure that
gnarly wave or
wipeout doesn't rip your jams off...
The first surfer jams appeared in the early sixties when surfing really caught on. Surfer jams were also the boon for companies like Quiksilver, O'Neil and Op. In the eighties, the word 'jams' was copyrighted.
