In thermosoftening plastics, the long chains have no cross-links. So, as the plastic is heated the chains lose their weak grip on their neighbours and the plastic goes soft. This will happen every time the plastic is heated, because as soon as the plastic cools the long chains attract each other again and the weak bonds reform. The plastic is now rigid again.
