Toutens are a traditional Newfoundland treat. They are simply bread dough fried with butter in a pan. Most often accompanied by heated molasses mixed with melted butter, toutens can be either a dessert or a meal unto themselves. They more than likely became popular among the poor, who found in toutens a cheap way to have a hot meal.
