In crossword puzzles, an unchecked letter is one which is only part of one word. In American crosswords, the standard is for there to be no unchecked letters. In British-style crosswords and cryptic crosswords, unchecked letters are allowed, and the taboo is two consecutive unchecked letters in a single word.
