18th Dyntasy Pharaoh Amenhotep III built a temple outside of Thebes to stand as a mortuary. It was guarded by two colossi, plural for colossus.

The two colossi, and the statues of Amenhotep's wife Mutemuia and Queen Tiy were destroyed in earthquakes. The rubble surrounding the temple caused a musical sound in certain weather. It attracted people from all over the world, including Emperor Hadrian. In 199 A.D. the music stopped when the statues were repaired.

All that stands today are two statues of Amenhotep, approximately 20 meters tall.
