Edward Roy Becker (1933-2006) was an American federal judge. He was appointed to the Third Circuit by
Ronald Reagan and served from 1981 to 2003.
Becker obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954, and Bachelor of Laws from Yale Law School in 1957.
From 1970 he served as a judge in United States District Court of Eastern Pennsylvania District until his elevation to the circuit court. During this period he authored the famous decision Mackensworth v. American Trading Transportation Co.. It was a case involving the missing wages of sailors, notably Becker's decision was written in verse.
From 1981 to 2003 he served in the circuit court. During his tenure on circuit court, he authored Freethought Society of Greater Philadelphia v. Chester County, ruling that the display of Ten Commandment outside a courthouse is not unconstitutional. He semi-retired into "senior status" in 2003 and died in 2006.
