Commonly sung
terrace chants sung by
football fans in
England and
Scotland. Most popular of these was Ooh Aah
Cantona, sung by
Leeds United and later
Manchester United fans in tribute of French footballer
Eric Cantona.
The chant is thought to have originated in the early nineties from Republic of Ireland fans singing
Ooh Aah Paul McGrath
I said Ooh Aah Paul McGrath
to the tune of Oops Up Side Your Head by the Gap Band. This chant was then imitated by fans of other clubs who inserted the name of a player in their team whose name has the requisite three syllables and was deemed worthy of such acclaim.
