The Last Night of October
By Jack K----

A month in the mountains,
Without the ticking of a clock
Or boots on gravel
Or the unexpected knock
Of neighbors seeking other faces
And the need to talk.

Men crawl on their hands
And press an ear to the grass,
They all hear the slow water
Through the unseen pass
Where black sands stretch to the west
And the fish are transparent as glass.

Listen for a knock at the door
On the last night
Of October, when we march
Through the mountain by torchlight.
There she stands over the fire's reflection
As if veined in moonlight.

Lights ring the lake like a burning tiara
Awaiting the song of Kiernan O'Mara.
