Roughly, the Mir can be divided in the following modules:
Core Module
The module was launched in 1986. The core consists of 2 cylinders, with a total
length of 43 feet. The module basically contains the Operations and Living zones
Kvant1
19 feet long, diamtr. 14 feet
This is the 'Astrophysics module' and initially launched in March 1987
it was also the first module to be attached to the Mir's core.
Kvant2
40 feet long diamtr. 14 feet
This is the 'Enhancement module', and it was attached to the core in November
1989. The module provides a window for Earth observation and an exit hatch
for spacewalks.
Kristall
44 feet long and 14 feet wide
Although there is a greenhouse designed to cultivate plants,
Kristall is mainly used as a storage.
At the far end of the module, the Shuttle Docking Module can
be found.
Spektr
44 feet long/14 feet wide
The Spektr module was attached to the Mir in 1995 and was designed
mainly for atmospheric and surface research.
The module generated about half of the electrical power of the
station, until the accident in June 1997. Currently the module
has been depressurized and isolated from the station.
Priroda
The Environmental module, mainly to study the impact human activities
on the environment on
Earth.
