An Ektar is a classical stringed instrument native to Northern India. It is the oldest Indian instrument. The Ektar is a type of vina, described in ancient texts as a "one stringed lute." The Ektar is made of one gourd with a bamboo stick inside. Southern Indian Ektars tend to be more simple, while Northern Indian Ektars have membranes stretched over the gourd, which the bridge is placed on, in addition to ornate decorations on the bridge and body.

The Ektar only has one string, which provides melody, unlike most one-stringed lutes that provide sympathy or drone. It is used mostly in Indian Folk music and is well-identified with the saint Mira Bai.
