1875-1955 German author

Probably the greatest German novelist of the 20th Century.

He was greatly influenced by Arthur Schopenhauer, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Richard Wagner. He produced a number of short stories and novellas.

In 1933, he left Germany for Switzerland forced out by the Nazis. In 1936, he settled in America. In the same year his honorary degree at the University of Bonn was revoked. In 1944 he became a citizen of the United States. In 1947, he returned to Switzerland and produced his greatest work. His complete bibliography goes for 1600 pages.
