The
Duchy of
Cornwall is one of the most important titles in
Great Britain. Not only is it high in the order of
noble precedence, but it brings with it thousands of acres of land.
The man who holds this Duchy, however, is rarely known by the title of Duke of Cornwall. We know him better as
Prince Charles, eldest son of Queen
Elizabeth II and his title of
Prince of Wales takes precedence over that of Duke of Cornwall. Nonetheless the Duke of Cornwall is an important
title.
It is as Duke of Cornwall that Prince Charles is entitled to sit in the
House of Lords.
The vast lands he owns through the title provide the money for Charles' household and his
public life.Prince Charles receives no money from the
Civil List. In fact he pays a large proportion of the income of the Duchy of Cornwall to the government in the form of
income tax.
