(pronounced NYE-dorf), famous
chessplayer of the
twentieth century. Born in
Poland and driven across Europe by
World War II, finally settling in
Argentina, his lifelong home.
Noted for his attacking style of play, and especially for the Najdorf variation of the Sicilian Defense, named for him.
Also a great promoter of chess, always ready with a quip and playing publicized "friendly games" with, among others, Winston Churchill, Nikita Krushchev and Fidel Castro.
