American Writer and
disk jockey (1912-2008). Born in
New York City but a lifelong
Chicagoan. Most famous for his
oral history work, including
Hard Times,
Working, and
The Good War for which he won the
Pulitzer Prize for General Non-fiction in 1985.
Studs is legendary for understanding and conveying the hopes, fears and texture of ordinary folks' lives. He supports many social justice causes, and still takes the bus to work despite fame and fortune. He refers to his trade as "the lively art of conversation" and describes his career thus: "I'm celebrated for having celebrated the uncelebrated."
Appeared in the 1998 Michael Moore film, The Big One.
