Heole* (hOW-lee) n.- An old Hawaiian word meaning "stranger". It survived the English assimilation and became part of the Hawaiian Islands pidgin English dialect. Today, the word "heole" is what Hawaiians call a mainlander, or a white man. The word is usually used to ridicule or poke fun at someone, and you'll hear it frequently by baggage handlers and Honolulu's airport.

*Spelled also "Haole"
