A telechir is, in layman's terms, a remote-controlled hand. This term is used in robotics (and telechirics) to describe a mechanism that can replicate the actions of a limb or hand in real-time. Such devices are usually designed to provide a high level of accuracy in the end effector of the limb, and possibly provide feedback to the operator. An example of telechirs used in industry are those nifty doo-dads that let scientists manipulate nuclear fuel rods without getting their hands dirty (or irradiated). They are also likely to be needed for manned space exploration in hostile environments.
