The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, colloquially known as the New Haven. Abbreviated as NH on their rolling stock, the New Haven was an important freight and commuter rail system, being one of the previous owners of the current Metro North system.
Like most of the railroads, the New Haven fell on hard times during the 1960s, and was part of the ill-fated Penn Central merger in 1968, and the creation of Conrail in 1976. The commuter service on the NH was sold to New York City (along with the rights to the old New York Central commuter routes) in 1983.
