Two Naval ships have been given the name Saratoga.
The first USS Saratoga was the first United States ship to be launched as an aircraft carrier. It was one of the only World War II carriers to be in service both before and after the war. The Saratoga was a major player in the Pacific during the war, fighting at such battles as Iwo Jima and Java. The USS Saratoga was destroyed at the atomic bomb testing at Bikini Atoll.
The second USS Saratoga was commissioned in April 1956. It was a major player in both Vietnam and the Gulf War, participating in nearly 15,000 battles in Vietname alone. The USS Saratoga was decommissioned on August 1994.
