Cale had been playing with a La Monte Young ensemble called Dream Syndicate, when he met Lou Reed and agreed to play with him (and fellow Dream Syndicate member Tony Conrad) as The Primitives.
Velvet Underground was also the name of a short-lived band started by Australian Malcolm Young. Malcolm's next project, with his younger brother Angus, was called AC/DC.
