Governor of New Mexico from 1994 to 2002, Gary Johnson was the first Governor in the history of New Mexico to be elected to consecutive four year terms. His goal while in office was the hopeful achievement of a balanced, common-sense approach to government while attempting to freeze the number of state employees and to reduce taxes, and he did both. Johnson was also a huge proponent of improvements in the education system and in order to combat violent crime, he was responsible for two new privatized prisons.
Governor Johnson was also the first governor to compete in the Ironman Triathlon, completing it three times. A huge advocate of physical fitness, Johnson crossed New Mexico on a bicycle seven times helping to promote his annual cleanup, Trek for Trash. His goal after office was to climb Mount Everest. Hopfully, he'll have time.
