The moment we've all been waiting for. The Mayan Calendar ends, and maybe the world along with it.

Apparently the Mayans were skilled astronomers, able to precisely measure the precession of the equinoxes. They were able to predict the exact date of a winter solstice more than 2000 years ahead of time. This solstice is a particularly special one because on that day the ecliptic of the solar system intersects the galactic center and the sun simultaneously, which happens exactly once every 26,000 years.

Coincidently, the same date was independently calculated by Terence McKenna using the fractal calendar embedded in the I Ching, the ancient Chinese Book of Changes. I'm told that Sumerian writings also ascribe great significance to this date.
