1954,
Louis de Bernières spent his
early years in the
Middle East before moving back to
England with his
family.
He spent a short time in the British Army, before moving to South America where he worked as a teacher.
It was after a holiday to the Greek island of Cephallonia with a girlfriend that he wrote Captain Corelli's Mandolin, his most famous and best selling book, while working as a London supply teacher.
He has written four novels:
