The generic and more general-use name for what the world knows as Velcro. Velcro is a trademark and as such you cannot use it without permission. This more generic name alludes to it's actual design versus it's name, much like Acetaminophen vs. Tylenol.
The name 'hook-and-loop' comes from the fact that Velcro/H-a-L (Hook-and-Loop) is made from hundereds of tiny hooks and loops; hooks on one surface and loops on the other that then mesh together when they are pressed against each other.
