Just read yossarian's choose your words carefully: now throw them away and it reminded me of this poem, one of my favorites ever. I used to know it in Signed English, but have since forgotten. Sigh.
Before I say anything else about it, here's the poem itself:
A Token
My lady
fair, with
soft
arms, what
can I say to
you—words, words
as if all
worlds were there.
—Robert Creeley
More than perhaps any other of Robert Creeley's poems, "A Token" both expresses and transcends the limitations of language as a medium of communication. It's exquisitely simple, almost minimalist, and uses silence almost as well as it uses words. This is as real as magic gets. I love it.
