The (forceful) control of a region of airspace. An airforce strives to achieve air superiority -- by downing, disabling, or neutralising (most of) the threats (ground or airborne) -- so that it may operate securely to fuflill other important goals: ground assistance, airlifiting, and strategic attacks or aerial intelligence missions are carried out by various aircraft which will not normally be risked where air superiority is not assured.
