This name twice embraces the idea of speech (aio and loquor) and belongs to a mysterious god who revealed himself on only one occasion, at the time of the Gallic invasion in 390 BC, in the form of a voice announcing the approach of the enemy. No one took any notice of it, but after the Gauls had been put to flight the dictator Camillus, in order to make amends for the disrespect which had been culpably offered to this divine voice, built a shrine to him at the northern angle of the Palatine hill, the place where the voice had been heard.
