American Whitewater's mission is to conserve and restore America's whitewater resources and to enhance opportunities to enjoy them safely.

American Whitewater is a nonprofit organization that provides a variety of resources and services for paddlers. These include:

  • River access: navigability laws in various states, advice on gaining access to rivers from land owner, liability issues, and legal assistance.
  • Safety guidelines.
  • Conservation efforts, both in keeping existing rivers free flowing, and restoring flow to dammed rivers.
  • A database of information about rivers and flow levels.
  • Drawing media and public attention to important issues.
  • Running a river accident database since 1975.
  • Publishing a bimonthly magazine called American Whitewater with the latest news about access, safety, conservation, events and stories.
