A group of
reactionary scholars and
writers originated in the 2nd century AD, who advocated writng
Greek only in pure
Attic (by that time
Attic has ceased to be a spoken language, and remained a solely literary tongue).
They published lists of "recommended" and "forbidden" words and phrases as well as "recommended" and "corrupted" writers and writings as far as language was concerned.
Lucian was one of the most prominent figures in this group.
