This is a service organization that was founded in 1843 by a dozen Jewish immigrants from Germany, in the state of New York. It was created to unite Jews in community and world service.
The goals of the organization are to fight anti-Semitism, bigotry and racism, to lead volunteer activities which aid Israël, and other Jewish communities, through leadership, labour, advocacy, and politics.
It was also established in Canada in 1875.
