A somewhat archaic English idiom meaning in low spirits, despondent, melancholy, out of sorts, or grumpily dissatisfied. Generally used, traditionally, in the plural.

For various reasons, Blue Devils has been used to refer to a few military squadrons and a truly ridiculous number of sports teams. Because of this, most English speakers no longer use, and are probably no long aware of, the original meaning.
