A boba drink (also known as black perl tea or bubble tea) is a sort of smoothie like concoction with pieces of chewy tapioca pieces in it. They usually are made of tea or juice and milk, fruit syrup, ice, and small bits of tapioca.

It first became very popular in Taiwan, and then spread to China, Singapore, and the Philippines. The large Asian community in Vancouver brought it north, and then it migrated down to New York and several other US cities. Finally, it arrived at college campuses in Seattle, San Fransisco, and Los Angeles. Very popular in southern California.
