The British Book Award for Children's Book of the Year was first awarded in 1996, effectively replacing the preceeding British Book Award for Children's Author of the Year and the British Book Award for Illustrated Children's Book of the Year. In common with many of the British Book Awards it is promoted under a variety of different names depending on the identity of the sponsor at the time; in 2006 it was the Red House Children's Book of the Year and for 2007 the W.H. Smith Children's Book of the Year.
