Antiquated name for a Macintosh control panel, so named because the file type of control panels is "CDEV". They were officially renamed "Control Panels" under System 7. Today, most Macintosh control panels are actually applications with file type "APPC". In Mac OS X, most of the functions of CDEVs are handled by preference panes.
