CEEFAX is the BBC's teletext service. Its name is phonetic representation of "see-facts". It was announced to the public on October 23rd, 1972 and demonstrated on January 14th 1973, making history as the world's first teletext service. CEEFAX's slogan is "The world at your fingertips". The following services are available on a regular basis:

  • News
  • City
  • Sports
  • Special events
  • Travel and Weather
  • Television and Radio
  • Subtitles
  • Over the next few days I intend to list most of ceefax's pages. Here's what I've done so far:

  • Front Page (p100) Shorter index, headlines on rotation
  • BBC News Headlines (p101) News headlines with the page numbers of the listed stories. Teletext news reporting is as impartial as the rest of the BBC's reporting (ie. not very). Feel free to complain.
  • UK/World News (p102) More comprehensive list of news headlines, minor headlines on rotation
  • News Summary (p103) A multipage news summary, the kind of thing read by the reporter as Big Ben chimes during the news at ten.
  • New stories (p104-124) Full page news reports as listed on page 102. 124 is traditionally a humorous feel good story.
  • This space intentionally left blank(p125-139)
  • News extra index (p140) "Some stories you may have missed..." Anything relevant to current afairs that no longer qualifies as headline news or doesn't fit on the 20 allocated headline pages.
  • Older home news on rotation (p141)
  • Older world news on rotation (p142)
  • BBC Monitoring (p143) Selected news stories translated from TV, radio, news agencies and press throught the world.
  • Older politics news on rotation (p144)
  • Dear Ceefax... (p145) CEEFAX letters page
  • And I Quote... (p146) Quotes that CEEFAX consider quotable, very BBC
  • Papers (p147) Summary of the days news papers from troughout the world. This is also very BBC in so much as they only report on the papers up to their "high standards"
  • UK Papers (p148) Just like the Papers page but reporting exclusivly on Papers from the United Kingdom
  • This space intentionally left blank(p149)
  • Latest News (p150) The latest news story, summarised in a sentance and in a small box at the bottom of the screen. The remainder of the screen is clear so you can watch the television channel at the same time
  • News Ticker (p151) Like p150, a small box at the bottom of the screen with news headlines on rotation.
  • Late Night Service(p152)Used late at night on BBC2 as filler, broadcast as an actual TV picture almost every night after programs finish.
  • TV Links (p153)
  • Sci-Tech news on rotation (p154)
  • Local pages (p160-179) Local pages with regional variations
  • Contacting your regional CEEFAX service (p180)
  • Text Life index (p190) The BBC's attempt at a popular culture magazine
  • Text Life stories (p190-198)
  • CEEFAX A-Z index (p199)
