A year long course taken by law school students in their first year (1L).

This covers the rules that detail how a civil case is moved through the Federal judicial system. Conversely, in some smaller schools this class will focus on how a civil case is guided through the school's State judicial system.

Often this course covers Constitutional foundations of the adversary system, civil disputes through pleadings, motions, discovery, settlement, trial, and appeal.
