CLEOPAS

Two disciples, Cleopas and an unnamed other, were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, a town seven miles to the northwest, on the day of the resurrection. They were dejected and disillusioned as they discussed the terrible events of the past few days. When a stranger joined them expressing ignorance of the story that so moved them, they explained about the crucified Jesus and how they "had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel" (Luke 24:21). Asked to join Cleopas and his companion at their evening meal, the stranger revealed himself as Jesus by blessing and breaking bread; he immediately vanished. Hastening to Jerusalem, the two carried the news to the other disciples - at which time Jesus appeared again to them all.
Cleopas is often confused with Clopas, whose wife Mary stood by Jesus' cross - though the names are of different origin.
