The Croydon tramlink opened in the late 1990s, marking the return of trams to London's streets after a thirty-year absence. The tracks run partly along the roads and partly on their own specialised trackbeds, linking Wimbledon, West Croydon, East Croydon, Beckenham Junction, Elmers End and New Addington. The design of the vehicles is similar to that seen in Helsinki and other European cities, and the services extends from Croydon over much of South London, offering connections to the London Underground and other public transport services. Apart from the Morden Road to Wimbledon section, the whole Tramlink is said to lie in Travelcard zones 4,5, and 6 simultaneously, and any ticket valid in any of these zones is valid on the trams. The Wimbledon section is in Zone 3. On the following map, the north-west end of the route is at the top.
