The dragonfly announces the day
with wings sounding gunfire
as the day breaks cover and scatters
Morse code through the coarse bushes.
Come bathe in the sunlight, children
wash your bodies with grass, clawing
the roots to bring worms to surface
to survey the wreckage from their trench.
The carousel of Summer carries cavalry
that fade with the melody, become cliché
and turn carrion for the vulture sun
to become the broth of tomorrow.
