Brand name for a credit card system operated by Discover Bank (formerly Greenwood Trust Company) and used for paying for goods and services. Previously owned by the Sears department store chain until it decided to spin off its Dean Witter financial division. The major competitors to Discover are Visa Card, Mastercard, American Express Card and Diners Club.

Discover Card gives a small cash back award at the end of the year. It's not much, but it can help out with your holiday bills. Since they also have no monthly fee, etc., this makes Discover a pretty good choice (especially since they now have platinum cardss). However, Discover is still not accepted in a handful of businesses in the USA, and is rarely accepted overseas, where you will have better luck with Mastercard or Visa.

The Platinum card, if you qualify, is a good choice for students and others, because you can sign up to be notified by e-mail 5-7 days before your payment is due, if you haven't already paid it. Plus it has the usual Platinum-card discounts and protections.
