Ellipsoidal is short for ellipsoidal reflector spotlight, or ERS. Other terms for ellipsoidals include leko and 6 by.

Ellipsoidals are the meat of modern theatrical lighting. They get their name from the shape of the reflector that sits behind the lamp. The reflector, together with a series of lenses, allows for the spot to be focused sharply or softly. Ellipsoidals are also the perfect choice for projecting gobos, due to their focusing ability. It is also common to use an iris with ellipsoidals to be able to control the size of the beam.
