A series of data tape systems created by Exabyte based around the Sony 8mm tape transport mechanism. Just as DAT tapes are physically interchangeable with those used in DDS mechanisms, Exabyte drives are mechanically compatible with Video-8 tapes commonly used in camcorders. Few people realize, however, that the ferromagnetic layer of Exabyte tape is different from the consumer video tape. Many an Exabyte drive owner has mistakenly assumed that because a Video-8 tape can be read and written in succession with their drive that the data on the tape will still be readable.
