A CIA operation started and maintained by James Jesus Angleton, its purpose was to prevent communists from gaining control of the Italian parliament. The operation used a variety of illegal means, and funded various right wing political groups, most notably the P2 conspiracy. In May 1965, the strategy of the group was officially outlined in a document entitled "The Strategy of Tension" which stated a plan to fake so much left-wing terrorism, that the people would actually want a neo-fascist, or at the very least, a more authoritarian government. This operation was believed to have wreaked havoc on Italian politics untill as late as the 1980s.
