Graphical Processing Unit

The brains of your video card. Used to render each pixel in a varying number of rendering pipelines, usually ranging from two to four. Useful for taking load off your CPU in graphically intensive operations like 3D Modeling, CAD, and, most importantly, Games.
The term was coined by nVidia to help market their wildly successful line of video cards.
