saw it. Not sure why, but I thought it would be
cool. Now, we went on a Saturday night, just one day after it opened, and it was in the smallest theater in our 24 theater
AMC complex. Not a good sign...
Well, it's not horrible, but not too good either. The effects were a mixed bag, which I had issues with. I'd at least like consistency. It pretty much looked like they spent a lot of money on some good special effects, forcing them to spend the small remaining budget on splicing in frames from old godzilla movies...
So the basic premise is simply, Godzilla is attacking Tokyo again. We aren't given any background here on why or where's he's been lately, and we really don't know if this is supposed to be a continuation of the previous story or an independant story of it's own. Who knows... Anyway, Godzilla begins attacking Tokyo, but he is targetting the power stations (he's a smart dude). The Godzilla Prediction Network is tracking him to try and benefit from the knowledge that can be learned from Godzilla. Meanwhile there's some sort of government organization that just wants to kill Godzilla.
So, Godzilla destroys some stuff and goes to attack a nuclear power plant. The government tries to stop him with all sorts of tanks and fighters and some pretty serious missiles, but it all fails. About this time, a 60 million year old rock flies out of the ocean and attacks Godzilla. The rock turns out to be a spaceship that was at the bottom of the sea unable to power up due to a lack of sunlight, and it was woken up by scientists raising it to the surface.
So anyway, the spaceship turns out to be aliens who want to take over the earth, but cannot because the atmosphere cannot support them. So, they want some gene from Godzilla that allows super fast adaption and healing, so that they can take on a form that can live on earth. They succeed in getting this, and became a really ugly monster who get's into a big fight with Godzilla. I will stop here and not give away the ending, but let me just say it will leave you open mouthed in the theater asking "What the hell just happened?", especially with the really corny closing lines. Oh man...
Overall, it's not horrible, but not really good either. Maybe worth a watch, though I wouldn't suggest spending $8 to see it at the theater... Oh, and I'm pretty sure there were some liberties taken with the translations, some of the phrases spoken by the horrible dubbing out of sync with the actors mouths made for some very laughable moments.
