Hermetic Science is a Progressive Rock group from from California. Founded in 1995 by Musicologist Ed Macan (author of "Rocking the Classics", a history of Progressive Rock) as a way of giving music majors from several local colleges a sort of "apprenticeship" in musical composition and performance. Since its formation, it has released three albums: Ed Macan's Hermetic Science, Prophecies, and, their most recent outing, En Route, which is based on Huysmans' novel of the same name. The band is known for Ed Macan's use of mallet percussion such as the vibraphone and marimba, as well as their medieval and world music influences, to create a sound that is unique in progressive rock.
